BBQ O’Clock with Bart Spice Rubs

After going to Grillstock in June (see my review here) I was inspired to crack out the BBQ and do something meaty this weekend.

When we were there we picked up some spice rub kits – a new ‘Smokehouse Barbeque‘ range from Bart. We used the New York and Mediterranean rubs for our BBQ and they were really good! Cue an impromptu review!

Chicken, pepper and onion kebabs

The Bart spice kits are really easy to use. The spice rub (enough for 4) comes with a little bag and you basically mix your chosen meat or fish with the seasoning and leave to marinate for as long as you want – I went for around 4 hours, using chicken and steak.

For the New York Steak Rub, I went for two big farmer fear rump steaks and cut them in half. This was more than enough for 4 people and actually, we even had enough for my brother (he miraculously turned up as the food was ready). The seasoning smelt delicious, full of peppercorns and spice and you could really taste it on the meat. A big thumbs up.

For the chicken, I decided to make kebabs using the Mediterranean rub. I marinaded it already chopped into chunks and then threaded it onto soaked wooden skewers with red and green peppers and red onion. I know people often put cherry toms on too but I find they don’t cook evenly whereas peppers and onions soften at e roughly the same rate.
We were less impressed with the flavour of this rub although it was still really nice. For me, the flavour was just was very subtle. Saying that – with a dollop of garlic mayo the kebabs were still pretty spot on and I’m fairly sure I ate about 3 of them! I love big bold flavours so next time, I’ll opt for their chipotle rub instead.
This was a great BBQ and a nice way to wave goodbye to the end of summer. We ate our chicken and steak with Rachel Allen’s Indian style potato salad, BBQ corn on the cob and a big green salad. There wasn’t a sausage in sight!
What’s your favourite BBQ item? Have you got any tips for next time? I’d love to hear.
*We paid for these spice rubs and I wasn’t asked to review them by Bart. I chose to do it because they are so easy to use and tasty! You can get them in most supermarkets now so go and stock up!*
