The Hammer and Pincers, Wymeswold

Last night Dave and I went for dinner at the Hammer and Pincers in Wymeswold (near Loughborough) and it was BLOODY LOVELY!

As a bit of a food snob with eyes bigger than her bank balance I’ve hit on a great way to enjoy amazing food in great restaurants at a fraction of the cost – go for lunch or early bird set menus. This is the way Dave and I have managed to eat fantastic food at Gordon Ramsay at Claridges, Maze and now the Hammer and Pincers!

Our table was booked for 6:45 meaning we were in time to order from the ‘First Service’ menu, fantastic value at £12.50 for two courses or £15.00 for three.

The restaurant is set in a lovely old pub and the rustic tables, chairs and beams result in a homely feel. Even at 6:45 there was an atmosphere and by the time we left at about 8:20pm, the place was buzzing! Bear in mind that this is a Wednesday night in a small village.. very impressive!

The menu was varied and mixed some pub classics like fish and chips and ham, egg and chips with some fancier and delicious sounding options like pigeon salad with crispy bacon and a soft poached egg and smoked paprika roast shoulder of lamb with chorizo and olive ragu linguini.

Everything we ate was delicious, home made, and served quickly.

To start:

Pigeon Salad, Crispy Bacon, Soft Poached Egg, Focaccia Crisp
Pea & Ham Risotto, Pea Cress Salad

For Mains:

Honey Roast Ham, Fried Cotswold Legbar Eggs, Hand Cut Chips, HP Sauce

Belvoir Beer Battered, Responsibly Sourced Fish & Hand Cut Chips, Homemade Mushy Peas,Tartar Sauce

**I did initially get served the wrong main, the waitress had written my order incorrectly. However, they were quick to sort the error and I got to try a little bit of the Flank Steak Burger before my chosen meal was brought out to me**

 For Pud:

Chocolate & Peanut Butter Ice Cream Sundae
Chocolate Fudge Brownie, Chocolate Ice Cream

OVERALL… we had a really excellent meal, the atmosphere, service and quality of food were very high and I would recommend a trip to the Hammer and Pincers to everyone. The wine list was impressive and reasonably priced too, I enjoyed a fantastic South African Sauvignon Blanc (Freedom Cross) for £3.50 and a Hendricks Gin and Tonic was also under £6.00.

We will certainly be going back soon and will make sure we spread the word in the local area too.

OVER AND OUT!

  1. I've had some beautiful meals here and would highly recommend it. Great advice about the early bird menu as well. £15 for three courses is an absolute bargain.
