Cheat’s cheese and onion supermarket sandwich

What’s your go-to meal deal? I often see people posting their selections on Instagram and asking everyone to rate them. By that standard, I’m either quite boring or a purist. All I want is a simple cheese and onion sandwich, a bag of salt and vinegar crisps and a Diet Coke. Apparently, more than a third of Brits buy a meal deal at least once a week with over 7 million sold every single week day. At an average of £4 a pop that works out at £28m pounds a day and a conservative estimate of £200 a year per person – that can’t be right?? Can it?

Anyway, I’ve recently worked out how to recreate the sandwich filling at home, and it’s a lot cheaper. Assuming regular ingredients from a supermarket, you’re looking at around £1 and with crisps from a multipack and a glass of water, you’re looking at less than £2 and half the price of a meal deal!  It’s also very simple, so why not give it a try?

Ingredients:

  • 50-60g mature cheddar, finely grated
  • 1½ tbsp mayo (i use kewpie!)
  • ¼ small white onion, finely diced, or 1-2 spring onions, finely sliced
  • A pinch of white pepper
  • Salt if needed but might be fine as it is.

Method (if you can even call it that!)

  • Mix it all together in a bowl and stick it in the fridge for up to 30 mins for the flavours to develop.
  • Slap it between two slices of bread!
  • Eat and enjoy!
