I’ve written about Nissin’s demae ramen range before and if you eat instant ramen, chances you’ve had them because they’re available everywhere (including the big supermarkets). The choice is broad with loads of flavours to try, including this duck flavour demae ramen!
I’d not seen this one before so it was a no-brainer and went straight into my basket at Wai Yee Hong, our biggest local Asian supermarket here in Bristol. At 65p a packet, they’re also really affordable and a great shout for a quick, midweek lunch. So, if you’re just starting your foray into instant ramen and don’t want to spend too much, I recommend starting with the demae ramen range.
All about that duck…
The flavour was good! Did it taste like duck? Kind of… ? The broth is pretty fragrant with a hit of five spice and an even bigger hit of white pepper. So, if that’s your thing, these are for you. As usual, with demae ramen, the noodles were good and firm, no sogginess in sight.
The instructions say to boil for 3 mins with 500ml of water. Then add the seasonings and stir. Personally I prefer a less soupy bowl so tend to go for less than the recommended 500ml but that’s down to my preference.
For me, these are a pretty basic instant noodle, better for a quick, cheap lunch than a base for a heartier meal. They’re tasty but a bit too peppery for my taste. I prefer a chilli heat to pepper and five spice isn’t my favourite flavour combo.
Scores on the doors:
- Flavour – 4/10
- Texture – 8/10
- Ease of making – 9/10
TOTAL: 21/30
Buy again? No. There are way too many other demae ramen flavours which are better. Like these japanese curry and sesame flavours.
