Demae Ramen review

It’s been a while since I last wrote on the blog. Today I just have a quick one for you – my lunch one day last week of demae ramen sesame flavour instant noodles. I have so many to try, piled up on top of the fridge, and now the weather is getting more autumnal, I’m definitely getting back in the mood for noods!

And by the sound of it, you are too. One thing I know is that you guys are loving the instant noodle reviews! Some of them have now appeared in my top 10 viewed posts of all time – not bad seeing as the blog is 9 years old and Noodle Reviewooodle has been around for less than one of those!

Demae ramen overview

Bizarrely, this is the first Japanese ramen review on my blog. I don’t know how that’s happened as Nissin Demae Ramen are often in the cupboard here and I’m sure many of you will recommend the packaging. Nissin have been around since 1969 and sell their products all over the world. They make a whole range of noodle products and Demae Ramen is just one of them. It comes in loads of flavours too, including tonkotsu, seafood, garlic chicken and even duck. Here though, I went for a classic flavour – sesame.

The verdict

Ok, confession time. Dave made these for me and he did it wrong! With some instant noodles, you pour the noodle water away before adding the flavour sachet to give a drier dish. This is not the case with these – they are supposed to be a noodle soup. But.. Dave poured the water away so I had them dry!!

The sesame flavour was good – albeit very salty. The saltiness though, probably came from the fact that there was no broth so I can’t really mark them down on that front without doing another taste test. The noodles are great – chewy and really nicely textured. You can see from the picture below just how thick and textured they look. Perfect for soaking up the sesame flavour.

At around 55p-70p a packet in most supermarkets (not just Asian supermarkets but also the bigger ones like Tesco and Sainsburys) these are a quick and cheap lunch. Basic noodles like these serve a purpose but can be a bit plain so I jazzed them up a bit with a sprinkle of black sesame seeds, spring onions and a dollop of my favourite crispy chilli oil!
