Dogs and pickles at Ferdydurke bar in Melbourne

In a city with as large and diverse dining scene as Melbourne, it’s unusual to return to a spot more than once. Ferdydurke was one of those such places though. With their delicious cocktail jugs, amazing atmosphere, vintage shabby decor and epic hotdogs, we loved everything about it. At night the place also comes alive with DJs (with food served right the way through!).

This is probably one of my longest coming blog posts, seeing that we left Melbourne over a year ago now (wow time flies). But I’ve googled it and Ferdydurke is still going strong with both cocktails and their signature hotdogs at the ready so I’m confident that should you venture over there after reading this, you’d receive a warm welcome!

Ferdydurke is in the CBD, not far from the QV Centre and Central Station and bordering Chinatown, making it a brilliant location for post-work drinks or meeting friends. for meeting friends. Their loft location with open-air windows gives it a secret bar feel. Entry is up a narrow staircase. It’s lined with graffiti and magazine artwork and the shabby vintage feel continues upstairs with stripped back scrubbed tables, metal chairs and more of that art on the walls.

Their bar food is well priced for Melbourne CBD. Around £5-7 for hot dogs or less for snacks like crispy tater tots, fried pickles and jalapeno slaw. The hot dogs are what we always went for though. They are served with a Bronson frank in a New York style bun and any of them can be made veggie too!

My recommendations?

These guys do hot dog toppings well. The dogs and buns are really nice quality but it’s those toppings that really make their hot dogs pop. Go for anything with sauerkraut, pickles, jalapenos and fried onions on it. Grab a jug of cocktail to share, stick a plate of chicken wings in the middle and enjoy!

Now, given that I’m 10609miles away I don’t suppose I can get a takeaway?

  1. This looks great for a casual night out. I’m curious where the restaurant’s unusual name comes from? I’ve heard great things about the foodie scene in Melbourne
