Judge's Lodging, York

After the most traumatic night you can imagine in the Scarborough Travelodge we were more than delighted to arrive at Judge’s Lodging for the last night of #VinkAndGingeUpNorthSituated just inside the walls right next to the Museum Gardens, this 21 bedroom hotel has everything you want – history, a nice bar, good food and gorgeous bedrooms.

This one was booked by Vicky (well done, you did a better job than me!) and I was surprised on arrival to discover that its actually owned by pub chain ‘Inns of Distinction’ given the real boutique feel of the place. The setting helped of course – built in 1715, it was the official residence for Judge’s attending the assizes court. Since 1979 its been a hotel and bar, and is now clearly one of the most popular places in central York for evening drinks, we struggled to find anywhere to sit either on the front, inside or at the back in the terraced seating areas!

What I really liked was the attention to detail in the refurbishment of this place. The reception and dining areas upstairs are decorated sympathetically to the history of the house but with modern touches. I especially loved the stools in the reception bar (modelled perfectly by Vinkos below!)

Room rate and spec

Our room rate was £110 for bed and breakfast and we were in the Dick Turpin suite (an accessible room in a side building on the ground floor). The room itself was beautifully presented and finished to a high standard. We loved all the little extras such as the telephone and digital radio/ docking station.

Breakfast was served in the downstairs of the house, with tables in snugs and under brick arches, this was the bottom of the house, once home to wine cellars, kitchens and servants quarters. Breakfast is served continental style – help yourself to cereals, juices and toast and then table service for cooked items. We had a snug to ourselves, tastefully decorated with old books and maps of the city. We both went for a full English breakfast (we were on holiday after all!) freshly squeezed OJ and a pot of tea.

The breakfast itself was nice but sadly not quite as tasty as it looked. The tomato needed grilling for longer as it was still raw in the centre and the sausage wasn’t as tasty as I’d have hoped. Overall though, I can’t complain as the experience as whole was great. Attentive, friendly staff, incredibly comfy beds and pillows and just a gorgeous picturesque location in the centre of York.

My top tip – ask for a room in the main house or one of the suites (like ours) – there are 4 or 5 rooms at the back which open directly onto the bar and garden. I think these would be pretty noisy on weekend nights so probably best to avoid.

*We paid for our room in full and the hotel did not know that I was planning to review my visit. As always opinions are my own and FYI – hands down, those pillows were sent from heaven*

  1. I've stayed in a few hotels in York and this is my favourite so far. It's right in the centre too so perfect if you're shopping or hitting the town! And Ginge is right, those pillows were heaven sent 🙂
