Sometimes I just bloody love being a food blogger. A few weeks ago I was invited to spend the day at
Brompton Cookery School near Shrewsbury, owned and run by chef Marcus Bean. Along with some of my fellow
BBC Good Food Show bloggers, I spent the day baking, learning a little about foraging and of course.. eating!
Brompton Cookery School and B&B are run by chef Marcus Bean and his wife in possibly the most idyllic place on earth. I drove down the track thinking the sat nav had lost its marbles and then arrived in front of a gorgeous Beatrix Potter fairy tale farmhouse and barns. In the biggest of the barns is the cookery school. Modern, stylish and with a touch of vintage, the cookery school holds up to 16 people. There is a whole range of classes available including butchery, baking, foraging, gluten-free and vegetarian plus many more. They also offer junior classes and corporate classes, perfect for team building days!
Why were we there?
We were there for a half day course and were joined by Robert Swift, a 5th generation artisan baker from near Ludlow. He took us back to the basics of bread making with some great tips for getting that perfect loaf. Once he’d wowed us with some mega two-handed rolling and plaiting, it was our turn. We may have been using his dough but I have to say it was the best bread I’ve ever made!
The day finished with a fabulous lunch made by Marcus. We had honey glazed hams, asparagus quiches, cheeses and a selection of Robert’s bread. We also had a range of products from some of the producers who are going to be at the BBC Good Food Show Summer. The real highlights for me were the range of sauces from Great British Sauce Co – in particular, their gorgeously nostalgic curry sauce which went perfectly with the glazed ham.
Looks like such an amazing day, Brompton is just round the corner from me, can't believe you were all here in Shrewsbury and I didn't get to catch up!
Oh no! What a shame! Yes, we did have an amazing day, Marcus and Robert were great hosts and the place is just beautiful 🙂
