Delis and Farm Shops Food Reviews

The Grey Lady Kitchen & Deli, Newtown Linford

I’ve long been a fan of the Grey Lady just outside of Newtown Linford in Leicestershire – perched at the side of the road overlooking the beautiful countryside around that area. I remember going there for my 18th birthday with my Nanna and family and it being a real treat. Since then they’ve honed their offering to be something quite special and the food is excellent.

With this in mind, I was excited to learn that they’ve opened a kitchen/deli in the heart of the village  (which even looks cute on a cloudy drizzly day!) and a few weeks back we headed over there for lunch. The first thing to say is just how friendly and wonderful the staff are – they were mostly young, probably uni students home for the holidays – but their knowledge and interaction were fantastic. The deli part is quite small but there is a nice cheese and cured meats selection plus some gorgeous looking home-made quiches, sausage rolls and other bakes.

The whole place is decorated in a lovely country kitchen style with more than a hint of the very fashionable Annie Sloane paint around. They are targeting the yummy mummy crowd for sure and the play room for children upstairs confirms this. That said, there was a real crowd in that day, from families’ to young couples and old friends. A really lovely mix.

We opted for the 2 courses for £10 lunch offer which changes daily. The produce and quality of the cooking are second to none and we found nothing to criticise with the food! To start, we both went for their chicken liver pate which came with hot toasted sourdough and a nice side salad. The chutney was fantastic too, full of juicy grapes.

For my second course, I had chicken in a white wine sauce with new potatoes and green beans. So simple but just perfect. The other half had a fishcake with skinny fries and salad. The fishcake was packed with fish and seasoned beautifully with a crisp outer coating. Incidentally it was also huge! As big as a saucer, which of course, made him very happy.

Now I say we opted for the 2 courses for £10 menu but of course when it comes to the crunch, the hubby can’t help himself and so he stretched to the 3 for £15. Pud was a lovely cheesecake with cherries and Chantilly creme. Yum Yum (I may have tried a little!).

This is a short little review for a lovely little place. Next time you’re in that area, be sure to book in. Their menus are fresh and reasonably priced and the set lunch is an absolute bargain. Also look out for their weeknight deals too – Friday night Fish & Fizz for £10pp has my name all over it! We’ll be back again soon!

Check out the menus online here and why not take a peek at their instagram too for some mouthwatering piccies!
