You know I love me some instant noodles but its been awhile since I’ve had chance to sit down and write up all the notes and pictures I’ve got saved on my phone. So here we go! Today, it’s the Paldo Rabokki instant noodles which are inspired by the popular Korean street food, Tteokbokki. Rabbokki = ramen noodles and rice cakes combined.
Paldo foods
I’m not sure Paldo is as well known in the UK as other Korean food brands like Samyang and Ottogi but it’s a very established brand in Korea. As well as their instant noodles, they sell snacks, drinks and ready-to-eat products! I bought these from Oriental Mart (currently priced at £1.45).
To the noodles!
The packet includes an image of rice cakes (the tteokbokki) as well as noodles so I was expecting both. Alas, it was just noodles. Had I known, I’d have bought some rice cakes to get the proper effect. Sad times as this meant they weren’t really ‘rabbokki’ as I’d imagined it. I should have studied the packaging properly!
As is usually the case, they were super easy to make. Just boil them in 500ml of water, add the seasoning and stir it in. I added a dollop of kimchi, sesame seeds and spring onions which brought a fresh, crisp element to the dish. The texture of the noodles was good – pretty standard and not soggy.
Scores on the doors
- Flavour – 8/10
- Texture – 4/10 (simply because of the lack of rice cakes)
- Ease of making – 9/10
Total: 21/30
Buy again? Yes
If you like the combination of sweet, savoury and spicy, these are probably going to go down well. And if you do like these, I’d definitely recommend trying tteokbokki if you can get your hands on it in the UK! I’ll be buying these noodles again but next time will definitely include rice cakes for the full rabokki experience!
