Last week we joined fellow food blogger Emily from Recipes and Reviews and her other half, for the launch party of the new Turtle Bay restaurant and bar which was opening in the trendy St Peters Square area of the Highcross, Leicester.
Turtle Bay is all about the Caribbean. We realised this even before we arrived as strains of reggae music greeted our ears as we walked towards it. As we entered, it was clear that the party was in full swing. Quirky decor included a wall made of stereo speakers, huge floor to ceiling murals and even what looked like a tiki bar! The tables had been moved aside to clear space for a dance floor in front of the band (there were two on the night), the bar was serving a selection of Caribbean beers and cocktails and waitresses were walking around with plates of delicious canapés
.
This is a real party place and I think it’d be perfect for groups of friends or for celebration meals. Due to the style of the evening, we didn’t get to try a huge amount of food but what we did try was great – spicy and interesting. The kitchen is semi-open, always a good sign in my book – and a really cool twist, next to the main kitchen window, there’s a ‘jerk chicken’ shack. No doubt part of the main kitchen but certainly aesthetically v cool! Goat curry wraps, chilli prawns, calamari, chicken thighs in a sticky sauce. We’ll definitely be heading back for a meal soon as I have friends who’ve eaten at others and really rate it. I’ll report back soon on the final verdict!
Have you eaten at Turtle Bay? What were your impressions? I’d love to hear!
