the brunch skillet at Pieminister in Stokes Croft, Bristol

You most likely know if you read my blog often that I’m no good at breakfast. It stems from the fact that I’m just not a morning person. Brunch though, now that’s something I can get my head around.  So when I was recently invited to try the new brunch menu at one of my favourite Bristol institutions, Pieminster I naturally jumped at the chance. PIE FOR BREAKFAST YOU ASK? YUP…

Actually, this brunch couldn’t have been more perfectly timed. Dave and I ended up going on the morning of our first anniversary and filling up before the long walk out to Ashton Gate for the Bristol Balloon Fiesta. With all that romance and hot air blowing around, we felt it was more than acceptable to eat pies for breakfast!

The brunch menu is available at both their Bristol restaurants, every weekend from 10:30am. It has a few different bits on it (including toasted sourdough and milkshakes) but let’s face it, you’ve got to have either a skillet or the pie. And funnily enough, that’s what we had.

We actually had the same thing (in skillet and pie form) – the wild brunch and the banger. They both consist of: sausage, bacon, rösti potato, béchamel sauce, a roast tomato, a poached egg, smoky beans and PHEW, a slice of sourdough on the skillet and bubble & squeak under the pie.

It’s no mean feat to eat that amount of brunch but we rose to the challenge. Just. The eggs were cooked perfectly, the tomato was so juicy I squirted it all down my front and those beans were seriously good. For me though, the winning element was that surprise béchamel sauce. Salty, smooth and creamy it mixed beautifully with the crispy bits of rösti which topped both the pie and the skillet.
Have you been to Pieminster before? For my Midlands readers, there’s one in Nottingham in Market Square. For Bristol readers, there are three, one in Stokes Croft (read my review), one on Broad Quay in the middle of town and one in St. Nicholas Market. With brunch available from those first two Bristol sites only. If you go, do let me know what you think! I’d love to hear your thoughts!
