If there’s one thing I love – it’s a food & drink festival and for me, the start of summer is always signalled by the outbreak of food stalls and festivals on our parks and green areas! I’ll be attending Foodies Festival again this year but not in Birmingham like I usually would – this time I’ll be heading over to their festival on the Downs in my new home city of Bristol. I’m really looking forward to getting to know some of the local chefs and faces.

Foodies festival will be taking place on The Downs next month between 13th – 15th May with a lip-smacking culinary line-up including michelin starred Josh Eggleton from the Pony & Trap and Simon Hulstone from The Elephant (read my review here) as well as MasterChef winners Ping Coombes and Tony Rodd!

As usual, it looks like there is loads going on this year with the additional bonus of the Bristol show playing host to this years British Street Food Awards.  I love street food so this is going to be a real treat and this year, in homage to the Olympics host nation, Street Food Avenue will have a special focus on Brazilian street food including traditional Brazilian BBQ and Rio’s favourite dish Feijoada made from black beans, salted pork, trimmings, smoked sausage and jerk beef, which is cooked in a traditional clay pot. Brazil’s national cocktail Caipirinha and Brazilian coffees will also be available.

As well as all of this, and the endless stalls selling amazing local and great taste award-winning produce, the Aga ringmaster chefs theatre, the drinks theatre, the live music, the vintage afternoon tea, the chilli eating competition, the kids cooking area… PHEW (you get the idea) there are also a couple of new and interesting exhibits this year:

Feel Good Foods – healthy living chefs and food writers joining the line-up to cook with superfoods including kefir, lucuma, freekeh, kelp and banana flour, and sirt rich foods such as blueberries, kale, celery, buckwheat, turmeric, chilli and red onion.

Into the Jungle – Festival goers can munch their way into the depths of the jungle this summer with a trip to the Vietnamese Street Food stand, where those with a taste for the exotic can indulge in insects, including grasshoppers, caterpillars, mealworms, beetles, scorpions, locus and ants. These tasty critters will also be sold in powder and flour form – a high source of protein – to bake, season and cook with.

I am really pleased to be an official blogger for the festival for a second year and can’t wait to experience it in a new setting.  Now for the competition!
