Halloumi burger
*Sadly, The Black Sheep is now closed*
If you follow my twitter, you’ll probably have noticed that I’ve been talking a lot about my upcoming house move. Last week saw us up-sticks from the Midlands down to Dave’s home city of Bristol. I’ve long loved Bristol and am happy to now be living in such a foodie place with so much going on though of course, I’ll always be a Midlands girl at heart!
On a trip down a few months back, we met up with friends (including the fabulous folk behind Recipe for Gluttony) for a coffee and bite to eat at The Black Sheep cafe on Gloucester Road, not far from the arches. Relatively new on the scene, this place is fully vegetarian, almost fully vegan. The space itself is quite interesting with a large mural on the back wall reminiscent of a Greek temple and shelves along the front walls full of random bits and bobs.

The food menu is relatively small, with just a few lunchtime options on it. The biggest ‘section’ belongs to burgers – everyone loves a burger right – and this is where I found my eyes wandering to. I had the bean burger – packed full of beans and seeds and served with a killer vegan garlic mayo. The bread roll was wholemeal and soft but sturdy enough to hold up against the burger.

Others around the table opted for the soup and the halloumi burger. A word on that halloumi burger… have you ever seen such a huge slice of the stuff! Paired with roasted red pepper, it smelt and looked very tasty. We shared a bowl of chips too, these were also very tasty and seasoned just right (I like mine salty!).  The soup was pumpkin I believe (from memory) and homemade on site. Perfect for a cold February Saturday! I really loved that bowl too.

Overall, this is a fun little cafe with good tea and coffee. I’d like to return and see a slightly more varied menu but as far as their veggie and vegan burgers go, they are doing a sterling job!  I’ll be returning soon to sit in the quiet calm and drink some more of that delicious coffee.

  1. Bristol has certainly come into its own. I've heard great things about the opportunities, food and Bristol as a great place to live. GG
