I really do love curry, it’s probably one of my favourite things to eat. It’s one of those things I really crave sometimes, especially after long days at work.

One of my favourite Indian restaurants at home is The Spice Cube in my mums village Mountsorrel, between Loughborough and Leicester. I’ve reviewed their takeaway before (read it here) and for both eating in and out, it’s a firm family favourite.

We are always welcomed warmly and the food never disappoints. The restaurant is small and always fully booked towards the end of the week and weekends so if you want to go, I’d suggest you book. They won the best restaurant award in the 2012 Loughborough Curry Festival and since then it’s always busy. You can bring your own booze too which helps make this an affordable night out.

Poppadoms with burnt bits

Do you have a system when you go out for a curry? In our family, its always poppadoms and pickles to start, sometimes a starter too if its a special occasion, and then we usually share rice and naans between two in an attempt *ahem* to be healthy!

I ask for the poppadoms to be burnt. It’s a technique where they put them on the hob to char them a little and it totally changes the flavour. Rumour has it, it also releases some o of the oil, making them healthier! The chicken pakoras are my top recommendation for a starter at the Spice Cube too – they are seriously good.

For mains, I tend to stick to one or two things – the lamb sylheti is to die for – and actually, is one of their award winning dishes. Cooked with tomatoes, onions, garlic, ginger and wild lime. It has a lime pickle flavour which is just gorgeous! It’s one of my favourites.

If mum and I are trying to be healthy though, we’ll go for a sheek lamb kebab and chicken tandoori then share them with a side order of sag aloo or bombay aloo. The chicken especially deserves a shout out, always cooked to perfection – soft and moist inside but with those tasty little char bits on the edges.

If you’re looking for great Indian food in the Loughborough area, look no further. Spice Cube delivers to the surrounding villages and you can pay on a card over the phone too if you’re out of cash. If you want to eat in and don’t drive, they are on the main road through Mountsorrel so just jump on the 126 or 127 bus from Loughborough or Leicester and it’ll drop you there. When you’ve finished, walk across the road to The Swan for a decent pint in a really great village pub.
