If you live in Loughborough or have spent any time there over the last 15 years or so, you’ve probably already heard of this place.  Cactus Cafe is kind of an institution here, situated on the corner of Leicester Road/ High Street opposite the equally synonymous Geoff’s Toys.

Over the years I’ve eaten there many times – for big birthday gatherings, casual dates and just with friends and family and in all that time, nothing has changed. Nothing. This isn’t a bad thing, in fact, I find it comforting. The menu is limited but ticks the boxes for a Mexican restaurant.

We went a couple of weeks back with friends. Having just booked a holiday to Mexico, we felt it only right to celebrate with a couple of sols and food. And celebrate we did!

Cactus Cafe isn’t going to win any awards for gourmet cuisine and if I’m totally honest, everything tastes a little bit the same – tomatoes, beans, cheese, rice, tortillas, jalapenos but, that taste is great – everything is well cooked and full of flavour. Of course, there are some more adventurous things on the menu- char-grilled swordfish and enchilada mole – but for me, its all about the burritos. I want tortilla, I want cheese and I want hot sauce!
They have a cracking midweek deal – two courses for £8.95 from a slightly smaller menu but still plenty to choose from. It’s just such great value! We went for nachos (two bowls between four) and then I had the Smoked BBQ Pork & Black Bean Burrito. Hubby had the Enchilada with Spicy Chicken. Baked and topped with melted cheese and sour cream what’s not to love? As our friends had similar dishes to our own, there are no photos here.

In conclusion, the four of us had a great meal in casual surroundings. There is a great vibe in there, friendly, relaxed and ready to party. The midweek deal is well worth checking out. The food at Cactus Cafe is simple and uncomplicated but it won’t leave you disappointed. Enjoy!

  1. I went once when I first moved to the UK and was really underwhelmed 🙁 But having grown up on the border of Mexico, I'm really picky when it comes to Mexican food! I wish there were more options here, but I guess Mexican food just isn't as popular here yet? That being said, you can't get curries in the states like you can over here, that's for sure!

  2. Cactus Cafe probably isn't authentic Mexican food for sure! I bet you had some great options when you were living over in the US. Yeah I know what you mean for curries, we are so spoilt for choice in the Midlands!
