Earlier this month I found myself back down in London for my annual Christmas weekend with my university friends.  I seem to be the only one these days who doesn’t live there so it’s a great excuse to visit. Of course, the weekend revolved mainly around food and drink (standard procedure) with our starting place none other than the Gilbert Scott bar in St Pancras station hotel.
We enjoyed a cold crisp glass of Moet champagne each with a bowl of crispy squid in chilli and salt and some hand cut chips. Delicious.
Following a wonderful carol concert at St Martin in the Fields, we then headed down to Brixton for a casual dinner at Franco Manca pizza joint. During my time as Magazine manager for sadly no more airline bmi, we did a feature on foodie Brixton, you can still read it online here .
franco manca pizza review brixton

Franco Manca is a chain of four around London, with this one being the original, and I am just one in a long line of food critics and bloggers to write about it but I can’t help myself, the open front double sided restaurant situated both sides of a shopping arcade has an irresistible charm and the pizza incredible.

Don’t expect anything flashy – scrubbed down tables and paper menus accompany cutlery in old tins and bottles of sauce. The menu is limited but all the ingredients are expertly sourced, the pizza is made of sourdough bread and your food is cooked in one of the two pizza ovens which dominate each side of the restaurant.

Prices are cheap at around £6-7 for a pizza and a couple of quid for olives on the side. We shared a bottle of the organic red wine at £13.95 and it was fruity and most quaffable!

All In all, if you find yourself hungry and in Brixton, head to Franco Manca.. book ahead to avoid queuing or opt for takeaway.. however you go about it, I recommend that you do!
